There is virtually no information on Sam. His service record is missing and all that has survived is the Medal Roll and his Medal Card. It has not even been possible to locate him on the Census. The following is all that can be gleaned.
He began his army career in 10th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, where he rose to the rank of corporal. He arrived in France on 13th July 1915, which suggests it was at this point that he was posted to 15th Battalion, The Leeds Pals, where he remained. He was put into A Company, No.4 Platoon, No.2 Section, which, as a corporal he probably commanded. He was discharged to Class Z on 19th March 1919, and was subsequently awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. (Source: Medal Roll and Medal Card)
